You’d think writing at the intersection of technology and retail I would have covered Amazon in all my content. But with our focus on SMB retailers, only so many of Amazon’s moves deserve coverage.
The two moves I’ve dedicated full pieces to include the debut of the Amazon Go Store and the Amazon acquisition of Whole Foods Market.
I chose to write about the Amazon Go store because everybody was talking about it, but nobody was really giving a great explanation of how it works.
We were fortunate enough at Software Advice to have access to and be able to leverage Gartner research in our content. I leveraged a great piece co-authored by Gartner retail analysts Joanne Joliet, Miriam Burt and Kelsie Marian.
Equipped with their insights, I put together a fun piece that:
A. Explains the technology supporting the “Just Walk Out”
B. Waxed about potential ramifications for SMB retailers
C. Highlights steps these retailers can take to lay solid technology foundations
I don’t need to tell you how big a deal this acquisition was. Seismographs across the country picked up the reaction from Kroger corporate.
Due to the nature of our editorial and publishing process, we’re not setup to write and publish extremely timely content. But I made it happen for this story.
The news broke on a Friday. I had my draft in first thing Monday morning. I pushed our editing and graphics teams to prioritize this and we got it out the following Wednesday. I know that might seem ridiculous given industry standards, but it was the first time we ever did that at Software Advice.
And on top of it all, the piece really conveys meaning and actionable takeaways for small business grocers and general retailers.
